NSOP Showcase Performance

To start the year off strong, returning CU Wushu members performed at the New Student Orientation Program’s (NSOP) Performing Arts Showcase! With a 500+ audience of new students, this was a great chance to show off the joy and whimsy of Wushu.

First Practice

Our first practice of the semester was a great one! Many people cited our NSOP performance or after chatting with us at the club fair as their reason for coming, and we were happy to see their excitement and motivation to start learning. We taught everyone stances, basics, and how to do a short combo to tie things together.

Chinatown Social

A great way for a new cohort of Wushu members to bond is to bond over buns :) To commemorate a great first week of practice, we traveled down to Chinatown, where we got Mei Lai Wah’s famous pineapple pork buns and pineapple custard buns, MollyTea’s amazing drinks, and equipment from Bok Lei. First of many great socials!!

TerpWushu Joint Practice

Toward the end of September we visited UMD, College Park to join TerpWushu and other east coast-based wushu clubs for a day of joint practice. It was great to learn new skills through workshops, exchange training ideas, and suffer in lines together with our friends from across the region. Many thanks to TerpWushu for being amazing hosts, as always.

The name's bond... WUSHU BONDING! This semester we took BONDing very seriously at our spy-themed social. Everyone showed up in their finest spy attire, and we played poker (gambling hi-chew of course), mahjong, and ate lots of snacks.

Mid-Autumn Festival Performance

Thank you GCC for inviting us to perform at the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration! We had a blast enjoying hand-made moon cakes and watching the other groups. Our members performed Shaolin, double broadsword, double straightsword, and chain whip. It was truly a magical evening in Lerner 555.

Night Market Performance

After many weeks of preparation, we performed at the annual Chinese Student Club’s Night Market festival. Our 34 performers showcased various forms, including a barehand fight set, double straight sword, tai chi, and spear! For many of our members, this was their first time showcasing their weeks of training to the broader Columbia community! In addition to performing, we also reserved a table where freshly made tanghulu was served!

Haunted Island 10k

What better way to celebrate our Night Market success than waking up at 5 am the next day to run 6 miles? And to make things a little more interesting, what if we did a costume exchange too? We are so proud of our e-board members who first said they couldn't do it yet brought out a magical surprise! Ok interdisciplinary!

Wushu x Lion Dance Workshop

In our joint workshop with Lion Dance, returning members from both LD & Wushu taught the basics of each sport. It was a fantastic cross-training experience for everyone involved. Huge thanks to Red Bull for keeping our energy levels high and to everyone who came out to make this collaboration a success!

Halloween Practice

BOO! Hahaha did I scare you? To start off our Halloweekend, CU Wushu members STUNNED dressed as various animals, porcelain dolls, Jollibee chefs, Jack O’ Lanterns, and much more! We had so much fun practicing, even if our movements were (only slightly) restricted by our costumes. Some may say enhanced.

"It Factor" Philanthropy Performance

Columbia Wushu performed at Sigma Delta Tau’s “It Factor” philanthropy event benefiting Prevent Child Abuse America. Performance groups competed for a $200 grand prize to donate to a charity of their choice. We were proud to win the competition, donating our prize to the Immigration Law Center. It was exciting to support two important causes while also sharing wushu with more of the Columbia community.

University Wushu Games

After many weeks of preparation, we travelled to College Park, MD to compete in the University Wushu Games, which took place on November 15, 2025. Out of the 32 Columbia Wushu members who attended, 20 were beginners who have not had prior competition experience! The whole team brought back 11 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Special congrats to Angela He, who won the Grand Champion prize! We are so proud to all of our beginners and team members who competed and helped us prepare for this competition! Everyone put in so much hard work to prepare, from coming to practices regularly to attending our Mock Competition! We are so thankful for your commitment and dedication!

Friendsgiving

Good food, better company. 🦃 We gathered this week to celebrate Friendsgiving and give thanks for the amazing time we had this semester. It was a night filled with gratitude, so much good food, surprisingly great singing, and a chance to reflect on the incredible season we’ve shared so far. We are so thankful for this community that supports one another both during practice and out.

CSC Taste of China Performance

Our last performance of the semester was at CSC’s Taste of China event! In Low Library, our members performed straight sword, spear, chain whip, and barehand forms. We are so proud of our members for the time they spent preparing and performing this semester, and especially our performance director Alex for all of the work put into planning and choreographing! We can’t wait to continue in the spring at lunar new year events and our own CU Wushu Showcase!
