Dear CU Wushu community, this year has really pushed CU Wushu in lots of ways! The club has grown so much since last fall, and it is extremely exciting to see how we have changed.
For our current members, we hope this newsletter brings back fond memories. For our alumni and friends, thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy reading what we have done this past semester! We are really excited to see what the club can accomplish for the twenty-SIX to twenty-SEVEN year!
With lots of love,
the 2026-2027 Columbia Wushu E-board
Amidst the halls presenting over 5,000 years of art across the globe, we performed as a main exhibit at The Met! 25 of our members (over half of which were beginners!) showcased longfist, straightsword, Southern fist, chainwhip, and tai chi to an audience of thousands. Watch the performance on our YouTube!
It was so special to perform for our friends at Fordham again this year at their annual Lunar New Year celebration, alongside so many incredible cultural acts. This year, we were so happy to finally win their raffle!
What’s better than a museum heist? A WUSHU-THEMED MUSEUM HEIST (of course)! On Sunday, March 1st, we held our second annual CU Wushu Showcase in Roone Auditorium. This event featured amazing student groups, including Columbia’s Ruyan, Lion Dance, Taiko, and Taekwondo teams as well as NYU’s Violet Diabolo. CU Wushu turned Roone Auditorium’s stage into a treasured museum that was targeted by spies. Watch the performance on our YouTube to see the story!
Did you know dumplings always taste better after showcase (and with a lot of 老干妈)? After Columbia Wushu’s second performance showcase, we spent the night playing poker, singing hypnosis mic…?, finding your animal…?, and, of course, enjoying a feast of homemade dumplings. See the photos on our Instagram!
The wushu grind never stops! Over spring break, we spent a day at the Sitan Tai Chi and Martial Arts school in Long Island to train our basics and sharpen our forms. We joined every class that day, starting with tai chi in the morning, an elementary class in the afternoon and more advanced classes in the evening. A huge thank you to Mr. Chen and Ms. Lin for hosting and teaching us!
We wrapped up our final performance of the year at JSA’s annual Matsuri with J-Pop beats, an incredible crowd, delicious Japanese food, and so many amazing performers alongside us! Our members showcased a variety of forms — including barehand, tai chi, staff, straightsword, broadsword, spear, and chain whip — bringing the year to a strong close. We’re especially proud of how much both our newer and returning members have grown throughout the year, and we can’t wait to see that progress continue in future performances!
And with that, competition season began! Our first stop: Garden City, NY where six of our members competed in the International Wushu Championships. An early morning meet-up and LIRR ride was no obstacle to our athletes, all of whom came home with multiple medals! A huge congrats to everyone who competed—we’re so proud of all the hard work they put in.
Our second stop: Davis, CA!! Thanks to the help of our alumni, friends, and family, CU Wushu was able to take 19 students across the United States to compete at the 27th Collegiates tournament. We scored 11 podium spots, as well as an honorable mention & 2nd place in the group set competition. It was a great opportunity to bond with other colleges, learn from advanced members, and gain more insight into what it takes to run the Collegiates tournament.
We celebrated the end of the year with a potluck dinner, talent show, and annual paper plate awards! With our resident Kpop choreo group, an epic rap battle, Smash Bros while horse stance holding, the chicken dance, nostalgic vlogs, and more, we were treated to the perfect combination of great company, great food, and a great show.
As the saying goes: nothing gold can last. Well … the 2026 spring semester of CU Wushu had to come to an end at some point! Our last practice was held on Monday, May 4, 2026. This past semester has included so many amazing accomplishments and milestones for the club. We’ve been able to meet new friends, learn new routines, and travel to new cities. Thank y’all for an amazing semester!
